Reproduction, turnover, and dispersal of American Kestrels in southwestern Idaho

Objectives of this long-term study are to document population dynamics, behavior, site fidelity, natal dispersal, and migration patterns of a population of marked kestrels nesting in boxes. The study also provides information on lifetime reproductive success. Data collected during the study (e.g., blood samples, plumage descriptions, behavior observations) also are being used in continent-wide analyses of geographic variation in kestrel behavior, plumage characteristics, and genetic composition. Data collected on basic falcon biology will be useful in studies of more endangered relatives of the kestrel. Information about methodology developed during this study will be made available to interested researchers and managers through the scientific literature.
Directions for constructing a nest box can be obtained at the NPWSC Nest Box site.
Additional information about American kestrels may be obtained at USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Science Center.
